Description: Tioga County takes its name from Tyoga, an Indian word meaning gateway or place to enter. The area now known as Ansonia was the entrance to the Tiadaghton or River of Pines, which was the major north-south Indian route that connected the tribes of the Finger Lakes (Seneca) region to the Susquehannock Tribes on the Susquehanna. The Pine Creek Valley is now known as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon.
